Harry Merry remake on Hark Too

WORM T. Presents: Hark too!

This 12" record is WORMs first vinyl release. It's a remake of Wim T. Schippers 'Hark!' which he released in 1980. Eleven contemporary Dutch artists took a track of the original record to create a new work, where the source of inspiration would still be audible. This mixture of weird, poppy and enjoyable tracks is a time document of the Dutch alternative scene. Musicians: Dennis de Bel, Raaskalbomfukkerz, Harry Merry, Vince the Prince, KODI, ZEA, Coolhaven, Yoshimi, Bertin, Pornologic, Hajo D.

In 1980 Wim T. Schippers who is a famous comedian, singer, artist, playwrite; most famous for his outrageous comedy soaps on Dutch TV the likes of Sjef Van Oekel discoshow, Waldolala, `We zijn weer thuis' etc., actor (Wim does the voice of Ernie and Kermit the frog in the Dutch version of sesame street for instance) and radio maker (ronflonflon with Jacques Plafond) Wim T. released an album called `Hark' on CBS using his alias Jacques Plafond and the Plafonnieres. At that time the then Director of CBS-Holland was (strangely enough) a fan of Wim T's work and gave him carte blanche to do a record.

Wim T. worked with several well known Dutch artists and composers the likes of a.o. Frans Poptie en Han Bennink for about a year. (Hark means hear or listen in old Dutch) But after finishing the recordsd the CBS director was replaced by someone else who (off course) wasn`t a fan of Wim T.Schippers at all; he in fact found the result absolutely revolting. Bound by a contract CBS had no choice but to release the album but they did so without promoting it in any way so it was no surprise the album flopped miserably although most marketing managers would say the result wasn`t marketable at all in any which way.

The releaseparty of Hark Too was held on October 31 at WORM - Rotterdam. With Live performances by Raaskalbomfukkerz, Yoshimi and Coolhaven. Wim T. Schippers was at the party and made a lovely speach about the importance of doing different things that people may not understand since it helps open minds.

In 1980 bracht Wim T. Schippers onder de naam Jacques Plafond en his
Plafonnieres een LP uit – getiteld: Hark! - op CBS (toen nog geen outdoor
abri-boer, maar een ouderwetse platenmaatschappij). Op een of andere manier
was de directeur een fan van Schippers en hij kreeg 'carte blanche' om een
plaat te maken. Dat was natuurlijk niet tegen dovemansoren gezegd en ruim een
jaar lang werkte Schippers met tal van artiesten aan de plaat (oa Frans
Poptie en Han Bennink). Hark! betekent Hoor! (veel gebezigd in de bijbel en
christelijke liedboeken). Toen de plaat af was, was er ineens een nieuwe
directeur bij CBS en die vond het resultaat weerzinwekkend. Contractueel was
hij echter gedwongen de plaat uit te brengen, maar hij deed dit zonder er
verder ruchtbaarheid aan te geven en dus flopte de plaat. Waarschijnlijk was
de plaat ook met een marketingcampagne geflopt, want het resultaat was
natuurlijk schier onverkoopbaar.

Reeds lange tijd is er bij WORM de wens om een heruitgave van Hark! te maken.
De plaat is onbestemd, raakt kant noch wal, is volledig onbekend, maar heeft
bijzondere kwaliteiten. Het is ook bedoeld als eerbetoon aan Schippers die we
al jaren bewonderen. Met Hark too! hebben we de plaat als uitgangspunt
genomen voor een nieuw werk, waar wel de inspiratiebron in door blijft
klinken. Het is een vinylplaat met Nederlanse topartiesten van de 21e eeuw –
een tijdsdocument - uit het alternatieve milieu met:
Harry Merry, Zea, Coolhaven, About, Bertin, Raaskalbomfukkerz, Pornologic,
Vincent Koreman, Yoshimi, Hajo D. en Dennis de Bel die voor een 'ouverture
algoritme' zorgt.

We hebben toestemming van Schippers gekregen om er 'iets van te maken'. Zijn
letterlijke woorden: 'jullie zijn creatief zat, doe er iets leuks mee'.

De releaseparty van Hark Too werd op 31 oktober in Worm gehouden met live optredens van Raaskalbomfukkerz, Yoshimi en Coolhaven. Wim T. Schippers was op het feest aanwezig en hield een prachtige speech waarin hij benadrukte hoe belangrijk het is dat er projecten, plasten en voorstellingen worden gemaakt die mensebn niet meteen begrijpen omdat dat helpt om geesten tec prikkelen.
